Barthes is one of the famous trio of French philosophers whose thoughts have had a momentous effect on contemporary literature and philosophy. The other two of this famed triumvir are Michel Foucoult and Jacques Derrida.
Barthes is most celebrated because of his continuous experiments with the way he wrote as well as for one of his most accessible books: Mythologies.
Barthes was always concerned with the Bourgeoise culture's ability to gobble-up all works of literature, no matter how innovative the style.
However, he was most impressed by the 'alienation-effect' employed by the famed German playwright Bertolt Brecht in his 'Epic Theatre'.
